Barn renovation Durbuy

The Barn at 45°

Orientation as an Instrument of Light.
An old barn on the outskirts of Durbuy. Its mass, oriented at forty-five degrees to true north, is not a constraint, it is an opportunity. The traditional roof becomes the instrument that reveals its full potential, transforming every hour of the day into a different experience of space.
Type : Residential, Renovation/Extension
Surface : ~260 m²

Year : 2017

Location : Durbuy, Belgium

Light

The southeast rooflights capture the intense yellow of the early morning hours. Just a few centimeters away, the northwest rooflights retain the subtle blue of the same sky. Two qualities of light, occurring simultaneously, that slide past one another as the hours unfold. In the evening, the sequence is reversed. The same roof, another painting.

Material

The rest of the project listens to what was already there: exposed timber trusses (oak and Douglas fir) and stone floors worn by a century of life. Where a new material is introduced, it earns its place for what it is: an ipe terrace that gradually weathers to grey with the seasons, framed by rusted steel railings. Nothing pretends to be older than it is. Nothing pretends to be new.

Time

Light as material. Material as time.
