Medical Center in Anhée

A medical centre that regains its clarity, efficiency, and energy performance.
The Anhée medical centre entrusted us with a dual mission: to study the existing building in order to improve its functionality and energy performance, and to explore the best possibilities for its extension. The work began with a comprehensive analysis of the existing team’s program: identifying where certain disciplines could share spaces, and determining the actual surface area required for the expansion. At the rear of the building, a succession of extensions added over time had multiplied the surfaces in contact with the exterior, creating numerous weak points in the insulation. The response was radical and simple: remove the existing rear roof and envelop the entire area within a new extension, a clean volume that consolidates these scattered surfaces into a single high-performance envelope. This extension also accommodates the new entrance, creating a central access point and a vertical circulation core that clearly distributes patients between the existing building and the new extension.

Understanding the team

Before drawing, it was necessary to understand how the team works: identifying the disciplines that could share the same space and those requiring dedicated rooms. This analysis made it possible to precisely define the required extension area, without adding unnecessary space.

A clear envelope

At the rear of the building, multiple accumulated extensions had formed a patchwork of surfaces that were difficult to insulate. By removing the existing roof and enveloping this area within a new, clean volume, the project replaces this fragmented arrangement with a single, high-performance envelope.

 

One entrance, two buildings

The new extension houses the main entrance, now central and visible upon arrival, with a direct connection to the waiting room. A clear vertical circulation route distributes patients between the existing building and the new extension, without confusion.
